This Pool Uses Margins

I had no idea what that means. For the moment, let's not focus on the fact that I somehow ended up in an Univerisity of Illinois football pool, or any football pool at all, but on the fact that I've been betting without knowing how.

I am not the betting type. Losing money makes me nervous, and I am far too risk averse to enjoy even being around other people losing money on gambling. But I threw in my $25 for the season and it gives me a reason to care about something other than Steelers games. This is important, because football provides the soundtrack for my Sunday workday. If it's not Hines, Joey and the gang on the field, I can pay attention with 10% of my brain while the rest of it actually does some work.

But, yeah, I suck at this gambling thing. The first week I forgot to make my picks. Then, for the past two weeks I've been betting as if I just need to pick the correct winner and the margins are just there to provide some useful information to help me out. So I wonder why I don't get credit for the Broncos eking out a win over the Chiefs or Chicago squeaking by Minnesota.

It's really no wonder I'm dead last in the pool, with 15 correct picks. It could go up to 16 if the Saints keep up with this whoopin' they're handing the Falcons, but my rank will stay the same.

Though at least now I know how to bet for next week.
