Seriously, why? I feel like I'm locked in a logic puzzle with no answer: you have two checked bags up to 23 kg one 10 kg carry on and a personal item. Fit everything in the universe that you don't even need without going over, or have airline personnel make you cry and then throw out your crap anyway. I am NOT paying $50 to $150 dollars to bring this stuff home. I just can't decide what to get rid of.
But seriously, I think I have a problem. I'm near tears thinking of the two storage lockers of stuff I have waiting for me at home. Who needs so much stuff? Why don't I get rid of it? How can someone as permanently broke as I am have so much stuff?
I think the lesson of this, my friends and family, is to not give me anything. Ever. I'm not responsible enough to handle gifts. I think I might be a hoarder in training. I think there's a TV show about people like me. Please don't make me go on it. Please steal all my stuff and burn it before it gets that far.
Oh, and the sibling getting a gift from me can count him or herself lucky that I'm not giving anything made of felt. Just not enough room for the extravagant Kyrgyz memento I had in mind.

You know, this packing thing would be a bit easier if people didn't keep showing me up and giving me stuff. It's sweet and all, but not really helping with my excess baggage situation. I'm basically down to as little as I can get, and should be OK unless I get a clerk who takes carry on limits seriously. Please let me get lucky on this one.

you might very well get lucky. i took about 8 zillion of those 20-kilo flights this year and only had to pay minimal baggage fees on a few of them (and i left the States with more than 40 kilos in 2008). i became an expert on making my carry-ons full of books look light as a feather, when in reality i could barely lift them (i don't think anyone ever weighed the carry-ons, though they threatened to at domodedovo, at which point i considered temporarily abandoning my carry-on in a corner while i checked in...).
and i had to laugh when i read about your stuff in storage, because i feel the *exact* same way. like why do i have so many ugly clothes that i never wear but cannot bear to part with?!
We were asking the same question when the Uzbek movers filled almost 100 boxes with all our crap this spring. and that after we sold a few tables worth at a yard sale. Somehow I have a bad feeling that I will not be able to turn over a new leaf while in China, either. Anyway, hope your trip back home goes well!
