So, um, apparently it's illegal to interview a government official without special permission from the Ministry of Interior Affairs. Oops.
Well, I'm not in jail and no one has arrived to deport me, so I think I'm OK. I'm glad this is Kyrgyzstan and not any number of other countries I can think of. Maybe I'll check up on the legal code next time I'm doing research.

I've asked a bunch of people about this since it happened, and while citizens they have no special knowledge of the law, but everyone has said that this guy was making it up and there was no way I was doing anything illegal. There's interesting stuff going on with my topic right now politically, which may have had something to do with his response. I don't know, so I'm just going to stay away from anyone working for a government ministry. 5 days left--I think I can manage to stay out of trouble for that long. Although I do have a gift for trouble.
